To remember a list of 10 items or people, and be able to recall them in exactly the same order without hesitation every time in the future. Could be useful if you had to introduce guests in a special order, or had to remember 10 very similar connected items, but they had to be in a specific order.
It works by utilising your own familiar route through a building, or a journey that you know extremely well. Along this route, you place the objects to be remembered.
You need a familiar route, or routine, that never varies, such as the route you take through your home, or the route you take to work, or the route from the main door at your office to your desk.
In my case, I use a route through my home:
Entering through the back door into the kitchen
Step into the dining room
Move into the lounge
Into the hall
Up the stairs
Onto the landing
Checking the bathroom
Enter back bedroom
Enter middle bedroom
Enter front bedroom
Visualize yourself taking that so familiar route again and again, until it is automatic.
When you are certain that your own route is pictured firmly in your mind, try the next step.
Place the first item of your list in the first location of your route.
Physically SEE the item in its location. Form that mental image.
Progress along your route, placing each subsequent item in turn.
Simply follow your route, and recall!
Imagine that the following fictitious list of people had to be remembered in exactly this order:
Mayor, Policeman, Bishop, Nurse, President, King, Doctor, Soldier, Scientist, Princess
Place the Mayor in the first location, form a picture of him in the kitchen, don't move on until that image is firmly pictured.
Then the Policeman in the dining room, picture the image, make sure it has registered before moving on.
Continue with each item in the list, making sure that each visualisation is firmly fixed.
When you have finished, walk along your familiar route in your mind's eye, and recall your list of people!
